Lesson 172: Cars (& Trucks & Things That Go) Decor

Welcome back to 2-year-old birthday party land! Today's agenda, a few more Richard Scarry themed decorations.

If you missed yesterday's post, check out Hudson's birthday banner here!

If you are interested in finding appropriately themed activities click here!

Creature Cupcake Toppers:

After making the Scarry themed bunting, I had some funny pictures leftover. I simply glued these silly creatures to construction paper, which increased their durability. I then taped toothpicks to the back and voile, cupcake toppers that set the tone for a magical and musical party!

Playful Produce Cars:

Richard Scarry is famous for his carrot cars, cheese cars, pickle cars, apple cars, and the fun, appropriately themed creatures responsible for driving them. In a Scarry world, anything can be turned into a car.

Taking a page out of his book, we attempted to make our own playful produce cars.

The wheels and drivers are from a duplo set. The produce is from, well, the grocery store. I simply cut out a square on the top of the various pieces of produce large enough to wedge the driver in.

Super simple!

In fact, writing this blog post took significantly longer than completing these projects!

Stay tuned for a few, simple CARS and TRUCKS and THINGS THAT GO activities, appropriate for children age 2-5.

Lesson Learned: When it comes to party decorations, perfection is not necessary. Creativity is.

Lesson 171: Simple Book Birthday Bunting

Hudson is obsessed with Richard Scarry's book, CARS and TRUCKS and THINGS THAT GO. In the morning for at least an hour, he and I will peruse its 60-some pages gasping over every single bulldozer and dump truck and CAR!!! The experience is exceptionally exciting, every time through.

Thus, Hudson's 2nd birthday party was "CARS and TRUCKS and THINGS THAT GO."

All week long, I'll be sharing various details from the party, with simpistic tutorials and lots of pictures! I get overwhelmed by long party posts, so these will be concise and pointed.

To begin, A Simple Book Bunting. This could easily be used for a birthday party or a baby shower. (I am not claiming originality here with the bunting. But I do think it is cute.)

I went scouring my local Goodwill, for surprise, surprise, a Richard Scarry book to cut up. I scored big time, with a small generic one (courtesy of Chik-filet) and purchased it for .99.

Also necessary, a pad of colored construction paper for $2 from Target and $1 clothespins from the Dollar tree. We already owned the twine.

Total Cost for supplies: $3.99.

First, I made a generic pattern for the base of bunting.

Unintentionally, though fortunately, I was able to fit three triangles per piece of paper.

After cutting out enough, I made a smaller, similar pattern for the inside that I used with the pages from the Scarry book. Though not all pages featured vehicles, I did my best to choose pictures that did. I also made sure the pictures were not the same color as the background triangle.

Black construction paper for the letters popped nicely against the playful pictures.

I made a second line that hung on my mantle and featured Hudson's name and new age.

When he saw the pictures of his favorite vehicles hanging on the wall, Hudson knew something special was in store! The shrieking and pointing and gasping and smiling were clear signs that the bunting was a hit!

Lesson Learned: Little boys love trucks. And if you embrace this fact, they will love you too!

Lesson 166: Excellent Postage

Look what arrived in the mail this weekend.

The town of Ashville inspired my in-laws to attempt this little diy home project. We were the lucky benefactors.

Don't you wish your in-laws were as creative, capable, and generous as mine?

Lesson Learned: Lit-up Letters = Awesome!

Lesson 143: House Highlight 7 (A Christmas Edition)

This year's Christmas looks like ...

Four stockings hung by the chimney with care

Grateful that Jesus has already appeared.

Grateful for His peace.

Grateful for His love.

Grateful for His Gifts. Both here ...

And above.

Grateful for memories. Old and new.

Grateful for Christmas.

Merry Christmas to you!

P.S. Yes. The cows have moved again.

Lesson Learned: I love that Christmas decorations can so clearly remind us of many reasons to be grateful!

Lesson 138: A Moo-ving Update

The cows have moved again.

Such is life if you are a painting in the Ashbaugh household.

Lesson Learned: Never get comfortable on my wall!

Lesson 134: Let the Filling Begin

Remember my empty hallway? (I got so much interaction with this post.)

Work on it has commenced.

Poor dead ladybug ...

My mom's friend graciously donated this piece of furniture to the Ashbaugh's. Us. It made the long trek from PA to SC in August, and just last week, underwent a slight color change.

With a coupon from House Beautiful, the paint was free at Lowe's. I was super lazy with the project. I think Valspar covers nicely, so I sanded a bit, used no primer, and only painted one coat.

I considered keeping the two-toned thing going, appreciating its subtle nuancing. However, in the end, the nuancing drove me crazy, and I painted it all one color.

Still on the look-out for knobs.

Stay tuned to see its incorporation into the hallway!

Lesson Learned: Don't go swimming in paint, ladybugs. You will die!

Lesson 128: An Empty Hallway

What would you do if you had a long, empty hallway?

Would you leave it empty or fill it up?

If you filled it up, what would you fill it up with?

Stay tuned for the Ashbaugh answer.

Lesson Learned: To fill or not to fill. That is the question.

Lesson 126: The Mantel (Take Two)

In the blink of an eye, the dining room mantel went from this:

To this:

It was decided in the comments section of this post, that a little more color would help liven the space up. I introduced you to the cows in this post.

A few more angles:

Tell me: What does this do for your moo-d?

Lesson Learned: Is it mantle or mantel?

Lesson 121: How I Learned to Save Money and Decorate My Home

Develop a plan. Narrowly focus. Have a mission statement. Set goals.

How easy to agree that these are smart ideas and yet, completely ignore them with small, seemingly insignificant details.

Is it relevant to have a mission statement for your home decor? Is it helpful to set goals pertaining to decorating? Seriously? It sounds a bit excessive.

This is something that people with too much time on their hands, have time for.

Friends, that's what I thought too.

I too went through life, haphazardly making purchases for my home, spending money on sale items that I didn't love, picking up yard sale scores that required too much work, and never, never, never being satisfied with my home!

Spur of the moment acquiring was not working.

Yet, I kept buying into the magazine's experts, "You want a fresh look? Buy a pillow!"

Buy a pillow. Buy a pillow! BUY A PILLOW!!!!

Y'all, I have a box of beautiful, wrong pillow covers. I spent a lot of money to fill that box.

This is how they keep the decorating industry going. Their answer is always to buy more and more and more.

Replace. Refresh. Change. Update. This time it will work!

I'll tell you right now, this does not work!

This conclusion was not easily reached. I fought and fought and bought and bought. I was convinced that small, ok items would come together and create something spectacular, regardless of opposing evidence.

Then, one day, I saw them.

I saw them, and I immediately fell in love with them.

I mean, I fell hard.

But, I could not afford them. I could not have them. They could not be mine.

I was crushed!

Oh how I wished that I could return all those random pieces of furniture, those almost right, but not quite right pillows, those inexpensive, but meaningless pieces of art, just to have the funds to bring these wonderful friends home with me!

I left the store and dreamnt of them for months.

Months and months.

I could not get them out of my mind.

And so, I began to save for them.

Gasp.

I made a decorating goal, and I began to work towards it.

That was in October. (Last October.)

I began to sell all the so-so items. Instead of immediately spending the earned money on another pillow, I saved it. I saved gifts. I saved random baby-sitting money. I spent less in other areas.

I kept saving.

I kept not buying.

Until graduation. Then, I was so excited and proud of Mark, I just had to spend some of the money on a perfect gift for him. By some, I mean, it completely depleted my savings. Oh well!

Providentially, I too received a few graduation gifts. And so, I bought them!

Two days after graduation. Seven months after first spotting them. They finally came home with me.

I didn't feel one bit of guilt. I was still in love. Five months later, I still am.

I love them, because they are beautiful.

I love them, because they are fun and interesting.

And I love them, because they taught me to save.

They taught me to break the cycle of fast, off-the-cuff purchases. They taught me the concept of delayed gratification. They taught me to be thoughtful, intentional, and wise, even in something as small as home decor.

The discipline learned has effected the way I spend money in all areas of life from the rest of my house, to my wardrobe, to my children's toys, to my grocery list. Our family's spending has been revolutionized!

So, how do you save money and decorate your home?

Make a goal to only bring in items that you truly love.

Over time, your decorating task will be finished.

You'll love your home.

And, I promise you will spend less money.

Lesson Learned: Goal setting, even in and perhaps, especially in small life details, can help a person spend money with wisdom.

P.S. I wrote this post before the whole Martha Stewart vs bloggers, "experts" comment. I had even italicized the word before it happened. I just think that is funny to point out!

Lesson 114: House Highlight 6: Quirky Weird or Quirky Cool?

Artsy friends. Today, I rearranged furniture and painted stuff.

I need your opinion.

Is this arrangement "Quirky Weird" or "Quirky Cool"?

Thanks in advance.

Lesson Learned: I'm not sure if I've learned my color lesson yet. HELP!
